The history of Girard-Perregaux can be traced back to 1791, when Jean-Francois Bautte signed his first watch. Bautte created a manufacturing facility — also called a manufacture — in Geneva where watches were constructed from start to finish, which is an honored tradition respected to this day.
In 1852, watchmaker Constant Girard founded Girard & Cie in Switzerland. Two years later, he married Marie Perregaux, and the Girard-Perregaux Manufacture was founded in 1856. The business transferred to the couple’s son, Constant Girard-Gallet, and in 1906, he acquired the Bautte House to form the company we know today.
The Manufacture
Girard-Perregaux is one of the luxury watch companies to be considered “manufacture” status, which means they have proven their mastery of all watchmaking disciplines and take care of the whole watchmaking process under one roof. Ever since Bautte established one of the first Manufactures in Switzerland, the watches built there have proudly been completed entirely within the facility, meaning Girard-Perregaux watches are never outsourced during their construction.
